Universal Studios in Orlando has grown so much over the last few years, it has been redubbed the Universal Orlando Resort. Once it was a theme park neighbouring Walt Disney World, where families could consider an additional day of fun, but now we see it as a sprawling attraction park which families now consider as a priority when visiting Orlando.
With the Islands of Adventure, the CityWalk and Universal Studios, it seemed logical to build their very own hotels on the doorstep of the parks. This means that everything a guest needs is in one place. After a day of exploring the parks you can walk back to your hotel room and get ready for a night out on the CityWalk.
The resort has a total of three hotels to choose from, each with their own theme and style. The most popular of these has to be the Hard Rock Hotel, especially for the younger guests. The funky, stylish interiors are adorned with rock memorabilia, including portraits and Elvis' very own glittered suit in the lobby. The best feature of this hotel however, is the beach pool, which plays music underwater.
Although I only got a tour and didn't have the opportunity to stay there, this was perhaps my favourite of the hotels. It seemed to be best suited to the younger guests and has a night life to suit, with the Velvet Session cocktail evenings and live bands which play on the pool side and even sometimes in the lobby. This particular hotel is closest to the parks with only a 10 minute walk between them.
The one hotel I did get to spend a few nights in was the Loews Portofino Hotel, which is perhaps the furthest away from the parks, but Universal have provided a neat transport to make sure you can get to the parks easily. The hotel itself is styled after an Italian coastal town and sits on the edge of the lake, complete with a jetty, where guest can wait for a ferry to come and pick them up and drop them right outside the gates. This is particularly useful after a night out on the Citywalk.
If you stay at the Portofino, make sure you have breakfast Trattoria del Porto at least once. The omelettes are made especially to order right in front of you and taste amazing. If you're also feel like a few drinks in the evening, you could prop up the bar at the Thirsty Fish, which proved to be a good location to meet up with friends before hitting the CityWalk.
One thing I found during my stay is that the rooms don't change much between the hotels. Each standard room comes with two double beds and a sizable bathroom, so it's really down to what kind of service and experience you want at the end of the day. The Universal Orlando Resort seem to have a found a good formula for world class service and consistency in their hotels.
The last hotel which I had a tour of was the Loews Royal Pacific, which seemed to be a little more up market than the others. This could have been down to the interior and style, which incorporated large open areas. This is another hotel with a great pool, especially for the kids, which resembles a blue lagoon, complete with airboat. This hotel also has one of the best gyms and conference facilities, so if you ever want to take the office out on a business trip, you know where to go!By Richard T Skidmore
